The Spin on “Masterdisk”
Masterdisk is a famous, and very good audio mastering production house in Peekskill, NY. They usually do the first pressing of an album and are famous for their quality and sound engineering.
They stamp the records they master…
…in what’s called the “Dead Wax” area of the album…it’s the small area between the last sound groove and the label.
Robert Ludwig is a legendary multi-Grammy winning sound engineer…
…at Masterdisk and he always “signs” his initials in the dead wax of any album he has mastered. You can read more about him HERE
EDP is the code…
…for the original processing plant where the album was mastered…also very good to see on an album.
Here’s my take on all the stuff of “Master Albums.”
I see it as being like a First Edition, First Printing of a book…some may argue that “Master” recordings sound better but that’s a pretty objective statement, it all comes down to the quality of your stereo equipment…and your EARS!
So why the big fuss.
Records with the “Master” stamped onto it will always be sought after by avid collectors and will retain their value, and MAY increase in value over the years.
Bottom Line.
Buy what you like to listen to possibly over-and-over, if you can get a “Master” at a fair price, do so…but it’s also up to you to care for the record with handling and storage for it to maintain its value.
